That was the challenge we faced when Joe was an orthopedic patient in 1990 and found himself on crutches for the first time. How could he get through a day at the office without completely relying on help from others? Independence and self-reliance appeared to be non-existent while on crutches, but were important for recovery. Backpacks worked for large items, but were out-of-reach while mobile. Fanny packs helped too, but were very limited in size and hard to fasten around his waist, especially with a cast or brace.

We decided to develop a dual pocket to suspend from the handgrip of the crutch. They were easy to reach and useful for a variety of items. With the pockets he was able to maintain a greater sense of freedom.

Joe went on to have additional surgeries while using our pockets 5 times in 6 years!

Meanwhile, his doctors encouraged us to market our idea.

Finally, in 1996, we determined the pockets had been adequately field-tested. We then began our research into patents and manufacturing.

The result is HandiPockets™ by Determined Products™. Our goal is to offer independence to anyone who relies on crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs as well as freedom to their caregivers.
